The Gwinnett Gladiators took a commanding 2-0 lead with a 4-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs tonight at the Gwinnett Arena. Jeff Mason led the way for the Gladiators scoring two goals - at the 9:14 mark in the 2nd period, and the final goal of the night at 12:55 in the 3rd.
The Gladiators leading scorer Jeff Campbell has been held scoreless through the first two games but has contributed 4 assists to help put his team in position for a sweep. The series now moves to Charlotte for game 3 at 7:05 PM on Saturday. WDUN AM 550 will reportedly broadcast the game.
As the Gwinnett Daily Post reported, the crowds at the Gwinnett Arena for game 1 were well below the season average. Game two was no exception as 3795 were in attendance. However, through two games, Gwinnett has had the highest attendance of any ECHL venue. Hopefully larger crowds will be there should the Gladiators advance.
